Tokaanu is one of a number of small lakeside settlements around Lake Taupo, catering for both permanent residents and those with holiday accommodation. It is a 5 minute drive from Turangi, the largest town at the southern end of the lake.
Tokaanu has a long association with tourism. In the late 1800s and early 1900s tourists travelling the Grand Tourist Route from Wanganui to Tauranga arrived by stage coach from Waiouru, stayed the night in the Tokaanu Hotel then departed from the historic Tokaanu wharf by steam launch for Taupo at the northern end of the lake.
Tokaanu Thermal Area
This short walk, a loop track, provides an interesting glimpse of a natural thermal area. See steaming hot mineral pools set in sinter basins and spluttering mud pools amidst the native bush.
For hundreds of years, Maori have used the geothermal resources of this area for cooking, bathing and leisure. Share in this tradition by having a therapeutic and relaxing swim at the nearby Tokaanu Thermal Pools.
Rainbow trout can often be seen here in the cold Tokaanu stream that flows beside the thermal area.
Thermal areas are changeable by nature so please keep to the track. Children should be supervised at all times.
Geothermal activity occurs where hot water rises to the earth’s surface. The bubbling water or steam we see are just the tip of a column or tongue of hot water that may extend for hundreds or thousands of metres below the ground. This is known as a geothermal system.
To log this EarthCache, you must do the following and email us the results. You can go ahead and log your find, (ie. you don't need to wait for permission) but if we don’t think you have honestly completed the required tasks we will delete your log (after emailing you first of course):

2)Goto: S 38 58.107 E 175 45.774 and take a temperature reading of the water. Email me the answers.
3)Goto: S 38 58.090 E 175 45.767 and tell me the words on the sign and take a photo of yourself, and GPS. Please post the photo with your online log..
