The Royal Bank of Cranbrook plc has become the latest victim of the
2008 credit crunch having suffered a massive cash shortage and now
faces insolvency. The auditors of the Bank, Debit, Credit & Co,
think that the problem lies with poor accounting and have
highlighted a discrepancy in the Bank's balance sheet which is set
out below:
Assets |
£m |
Land and buildings |
8,655 |
Stock |
7,801 |
Cash |
1,218 |
Amounts owed by customers |
8,000 |
Reserves and liabilities |
|
Profits to date |
(1,221) |
Amounts owed to customers |
(8,016) |
Loans |
(6,634) |
Other creditors |
(9,866) |
Net liabilities |
(63) |
Upon further investigation the senior partner at Debit, Credit
& Co has identified a potential problem with the above balance
sheet that was provided by the Bank to the Stock Exchange because
the numbers do not balance (i.e. add up to 0). The senior partner
thinks that one of the bankers has made a serious transposition
error by reversing the last two digits in one of the Bank's balance
sheet entries above. If the transposition error is corrected then
the balance sheet will balance and the assets will equal the
reserves and liabilities.
For the balance sheet entry that has caused the error:-
A = the 1st digit
B = the 2nd digit
C = the 3rd digit
D = the 4th digit
Then solve the following:-
E = the 3rd digit in the year that the world's 1st professional
body of accountants was established.
