Porta Portese fu costruita nel XVII secolo al posto dell'antica
Porta Portuensis, che si apriva nella cinta delle Mura Aureliane, e
prendeva il nome dalla via Portuensis che da essa usciva e che
conduceva ai porti di Claudio e di Traiano.
Nel 1643 papa Urbano VIII Barberini commissionò la costruzione
delle Mura Gianicolensi con l'intento di racchiudere entro le mura
Trastevere ed il Gianicolo.
Porta Portese, (Figura 1 - Incisione di Giuseppe Vasi) arretrata
un centinaio di metri più a nord rispetto alla Portuensis ma sullo
stesso asse stradale, venne ultimata l'anno successivo, nel 1644,
sotto il pontificato del nuovo pontefice Innocenzo X Pamphilj, come
evidenziato dallo stemma di famiglia posto sopra il fornice.
Lo spiazzo creatosi in seguito all'apertura della nuova porta
diede vita, nell'ultimo dopoguerra, al tradizionale ed oramai
conosciutissimo mercato di Porta Portese. In passato un mercato del
genere si svolgeva in piazza della Cancelleria, ma il mercato di
Porta Portese fu la continuazione del fiorente mercato nero che si
svolgeva a Tor di Nona durante gli anni duri della Seconda Guerra
Mondiale.
Nel mercato di Porta Portese è ambientata una parte del film di
Vittorio De Sica Ladri di biciclette (1948) ritenuto tra le massime
espressioni del neorealismo cinematografico italiano (Figura 2 -
scena dal film).
Il cantautore italiano Claudio Baglioni ha dedicato al mercato
una canzone, con una simpatica descrizione dei banchi e dei
personaggi che lo animano.
Il mercato delle pulci si svolge attualmente la domenica mattina
e si estende dalla porta (Figura 3 - Porta Portese oggi) nelle
strade limitrofe arrivando fino a Viale Trastevere. Quando visitate
il mercato, come in ogni luogo affollato, è bene avere sempre sotto
controllo il proprio portafoglio e le proprie cose.
Il posto è pieno di muggles, specialmente la domenica
mattina. Fate molta attenzione, la sopravvivenza della cache
dipende da voi!!

Porta Portese was built in the seventeenth century instead of
Porta Portuensis, which opened in the Aurelian Walls, and
took its name from Via Portuensis leading to ports of
Claudius and Trajan.
In 1643 Pope Urbano VIII Barberini commissioned the construction
of the Mura Gianicolensi with the idea to enclose within the walls
Trastevere and the Gianicolo.
Porta Portese (Figure 1 - Incisione by Giuseppe Vasi), set back
a hundred meters north than the Porta Portuensis but on
the same road, was completed the following year, in 1644, under the
new pontificate of Pope Innocenzo X Pamphili, as evidenced by the
family coat of arms above the fornix.
The open space created by the backwards opening of the Porta
gave life, in the postwar period, to the traditional market now
known as Porta Portese. In the past a market of its kind took place
in front of the Chancellery, but the market of Porta Portese was
the continuation of the thriving black market that took place at
Tor di Nona during the hard years of the Second World War.
In the market of Porta Portese were set many scenes of the
famous movie by Vittorio De Sica "Ladri di biciclette” (1948)
considered among the greatest expressions of Italian neo-realism
(Figure 2 - a scene from the film).
The Italian singer Claudio Baglioni has dedicated a song to the
market, with a nice description of the market stalls and of the
characters who animate it.
The flea market is currently open only on Sunday morning and
extends from the Porta Portese (Figure 3 - Porta Portese
oggi) in the neighboring streets up to Viale Trastevere. When
you visit the market, as in any crowded place, it is wise to always
have control of your wallet and of your things.
The area is full of muggles, especially on Sunday
morning. Please be very stealthy and pay a lot of attention in
managing the cache, its survival depends on you! |
