Geocache Description:

#3 in my Little Green Space series. Neat park with both gravel and concrete trails, picnic shelter, and playground equipment. No need to go anywhere near the railroad tracks.

The 2.86-acre Brookland Park was established in 1924.

The park was established prior to construction of nearly all of the houses in its immediate surroundings. It was formally transferred to the City of Iowa City in December 1924 for use as municipal parkland. Its establishment came the same year that the University received a Rockefeller Foundation grant to build the new hospital on the west side of Iowa City.

The 83-year-old park is part of the much older Melrose Neighborhood, which was settled in phases beginning in the 1850s, when Melrose Avenue, originally called Snook’s Grove Road or the “Poor Farm Road”, was laid out as a state road to connect Iowa City to points west. In 17 years (when the 17-year cicadas next appear) Brookland Park will become a Century Park.

There have been questions about parking. You will want to be east bound on Greenwood Dr. There is a short stretch just east of the RR crossing that parking is allowed.

Hunt this cache at your own risk. Please obey all park rules. Most importantly have fun!!!!!
