Rigas Stradina universitate savu nosaukumu ieguva 2002. gada, tomer tas vesturiskas saknes meklejamas Rigas Medicinas instituta, kas 1950. gada tika nodibinats uz Latvijas Valsts universitates Medicinas fakultates bazes, bet 1990. gada tika pardevets par Latvijas Medicinas akademiju. Lielaka dala Latvijas izcilako medicinas darbinieku, kas strada dažadas nozares, ieguvuši savu izglitibu šaja augstskola.

Riga Stradins University gained its status in year 2002, however its historical roots extend to Riga Medical Institute founded in year 1950 on the basis of Latvia State University Faculty of Medicine and in year 1990 renamed as Medical Academy of Latvia. The most Latvia’s eminent practitioners of medicine working in various spheres are educated at this university
The beginning of higher medical education can be traced back to the foundation of the Faculty of Medicine in the Latvia High School in 1919. In 1923 the University of Latvia Act came into effect and the Latvia High School was renamed the University of Latvia (UL). The UL Faculty of Medicine was established in 1920.
The Academy of Medicine of Latvia as an independent higher educational establishment can be traced back to 1950, when the Faculty of Medicine had developed into the Riga Medical Institute; in 1990 the institute was renamed the Academy of Medicine of Latvia (AML). Since 1990 AML has made crucial changes in their study programs to provide an excellent education, which would allow graduates to work in different countries of the world.
