25 Jahre Bad Mettenhof
Der Kieler Stadteil Mettenhof wurde seit den Sechziger Jahren als typische Trabantenstadt erbaut. Seinen Namen trägt er von dem früher hier gelegenen Bauernhof, auf dem in alter Zeit eine Bäuerin namens Mette gewohnt hatte.
Mettenhof hat -wie alle Trabantenstädte- keinen besonders guten Ruf.
Um dem entgegenzuwirken und den Lokalpatriotismus zu fördern, hatte der Kieler SPD-Landtagsabgeordnete Rolf Selzer 1983 eine interessante Idee. Da es in Mettenhof als einzigem Kieler Stadtteil keine einzige Wohnung ohne eigenes Bad gab (denn es gab keine Altbauten mit „Klo auf halber Treppe“), schuf er den Begriff „Bad Mettenhof“ und einen dazu gehörigen Autoaufkleber in der Anmutung eines Ortsschildes, der in den Achtziger Jahren die Autos vieler Mettenhofer zierte.
Rolf Selzer wurde damals von vielen wegen dieser Idee scherzhaft auch als „der Kurdirektor von Bad Mettenhof“ bezeichnet.
Lange Jahre war auch eine Schwimmhalle für Mettenhof im Gespräch, aber passiert ist seit 25 Jahren nichts ...

The 25th anniversary of Bad Mettenhof (or "The Silver Jubilee of Mettenhof Spa")
Mettenhof, a part of Kiel, was built as a typical satellite town, beginning in the Sixties. The name originates from a farm in this area, where (a long time ago) a farmers wife went by the name of Mette.
As any satellite town, Mettenhof doesn´t have a very good reputation. To improve the reputation and increase “local patriotism”, the Kiel-based Social Democratic member of the regional parliament, Rolf Selzer, had an interesting idea in 1983. As Mettenhof was the only part of Kiel, where each and every appartement had a separate bathroom (because there were no old buildings with “a loo half way down the staircase”), he created the Slogan “Bad Mettenhof” and a respective car sticker, which could often be seen on Mettenhof cars in the Eighties.
(The story is a pun in German, the words for a “bath” and for a “spa” are the same “Bad” , so it would be like “Mettenhof Spa” in English).
Because of this idea, Rolf Selzer was jokingly even called the “Director of Mettenhof Spa” by many people.
For a long time there have been discussions about an indoor swimming pool in Mettenhof, but nothing has happened for the past 25 years ...
