Der Maissauer
Amethyst ist eine echte Rarität, ein so genannter „Gang- oder
Bänder-Amethyst“. Insgesamt gibt es nur etwa zwanzig Regionen
weltweit, die Bänderamethyste guter Qualität hervorbringen; das
unvergleichliche Violett des Amethysts findet man nur in den
allerwenigsten Vorkommen so wie hier in
Maissau.Das
Amethystvorkommen in Maissau weist einen gesicherten Verlauf von
ca. 400 m auf, davon ca. 40 m im Schaustollen aufgeschlossen
zugänglich zeigt eine maximale Breite von 2 m und steht nahezu
senkrecht.
Entstehung
Die
Entstehung des Maissauer Amethyst vollzog sich vor etwa 280
Millionen Jahren in der Tiefe eines Urgebirges. Hier setzten sich
an den Wänden einer riesigen Kluftspalte mehrere Schichten
Quarzkristalle ab. Reiner Quarz besteht aus Silizium und
Sauerstoff, in sehr kleinen Mengen finden sich darin
Spurenelemente, z.B. Eisen, Aluminium u.a. Das Muttergestein
Maissauer Granit enthält radioaktive Partikel, die
ionisierende Strahlung aussenden. Diese Strahlung bewirkte im
Zusammenspiel mit den Spurenelementen eine unterschiedliche Färbung
der Quarzschichten, im Laufe vieler Jahrmillionen entstand das
charakteristische Zackenmuster im Maissauer Amethyst.

Deposit
The
Maissau Amethyst is a genuine rarity, a so-called ‘banded- or
striated amethyst’. There are no more that 20 regions in the world
that produce striped amethysts of good quality, and one has to look
a long way to find stones of a colour comparable to those found in
Maissau.
The
Amethyst deposit in Maissau has a tangible length of 400 meters, of
which 40 meters are visible in an open gallery. It has a max.
breadth of 2 meters and stands in an almost vertical
position
Evolution
The
evolution of the Maissau Amethyst took place some 280 million years
ago in the depths of an ancient mountain range. It was here that
layers of quartz crystals were deposited on the walls of a gigantic
crevasse. Pure quartz consists of silicon and oxygen, and also
contains very small quantities of trace elements, e.g. iron,
aluminium, among others. The mother rock, Maissau granite, contains
radioactive particles that transmit ionised rays. In conformance
with the trace elements, these rays produced varying colours in the
quartz layers, and in the course of many millions of years the
characteristic jagged pattern of the Maissau Amethyst took
shape.
