Geocache Description:

St Giles & All Saints Church

Photobucket

This is the only 'Grade 1' listed building in Orsett. The main doorway dates back to 1160. The church has since been repeatedly extended over the centuries. It is unusual having both a 15th century tower and a 17th century spire. The badly eroded sandstone cross in the graveyard was erected by the Whitmore family. An elaborate tomb is also erected here for Captain Bonham - a slave trader and the original owner of Orsett House.

In July 1926 a fire caused serious damage to the church, much of the roof and ancient stained glass was destroyed.

The cache has a log book but no pen so please bring one with you.

PLEASE REPLACE THE LOGBOOK IN THE ZIPLOCK BAG AS THIS KEEPS IT DRY !!

If any body would like to expand to this series please do, could you please let sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
