En mai 1682, alors que Louis XIV régnait sur la France et que le Pape Innocent XI siégeait à Rome, la Vierge apparut à Madeleine Serres et ses cinq compagnons âgés de 8 à 13 ans, sur le côteau de Lareu, site actuel de la chapelle Notre Dame de St Bernard.
Madeleine révéla que la Vierge avait demandé la construction d’une chapelle à l’endroit de son apparition. Elle avait ajouté que quelqu’un viendrait de loin pour cela. Elle avait aussi demandé d’arranger la fontaine qui coulait là, de sorte qu’on puisse y boire et se laver car les malades qui toucheraient cette eau seraient soulagés.
Lorsque les habitants des villages voisins apprirent cette histoire, ils vinrent en grand nombre et le bruit de miracles se répandit, dont certains attestés par les médecins.
Cependant, à cause de l’incrédulité de l’ Evêque d’ Alan, la situation fut bloquée.
Six ans plus tard, en mai 1688, un novice de l’abbaye de Trappes : Pierre Cathiéry, cédant à une puissante et irrésitible impulsion, vint se proposer pour la construction de la chapelle.
Il se heurta à un nouveau refus, mais il s’installa à Montoulieu et s’attira la sympathie de nombreuses personnes, dont des gentihommes qui résolurent de l’aider. Sous la pression, l’ Evêque finit par accepter et dix mois plus tard, une chapelle en forme de trêfle à trois feuilles s’élevait à Lareu.
Le 5 octobre 1794, la Convention ordonna la destruction de toutes les chapelles qui n’étaient pas des églises paroissiales. Notre Dame de Saint Bernard fut rasée.
(C'est pour remplacer cette chapelle détruite que l' abbé Chac choisit le coteau du Mailho-Blanc pour la construction d’un nouveau sanctuaire. Les travaux commencèrent en 1868. Voir

En 1912, la fontaine trouva sa forme d’aujourd’hui. De nombreuses guérisons miraculeuses s’y produirent .
Après la guerre de 14-18, le sanctuaire allait prendre un nouvel essor.
La reconstruction de la chapelle fut relancée en 1922, une année très faste :
Une Piéta du XVIème siècle qui dominait la fontaine depuis toujours avait été volée en mai 1908, un larcin qui avait beaucoup attristé tous les fidèles.
Or, un jour de juin 1922, le curé de Montoulieu reçut un colis anonyme venant de Paris qui contenait la Piéta dérobée ! On peut la voir aujourd’hui à sa place en haut de la fontaine.
La reconstruction devait durer 5 ans, jusqu’à un désaccord entre le curé d’ Alan et celui de Montoulieu, qui dirigeait les travaux. Tout s’arrêta alors.
Il fallut attendre 20 ans… Les travaux reprirent après la guerre de 39-45 grâce à un puissant effort collectif qui réunit toutes les communes voisines. Au cours de l’hiver 1956-57, le porche d’entrée fut bâti et la bâtisse était alors entièrement terminée !
Les grands pèlerinages annuels se font le 15 août et le dimanche le plus proche du 8 septembre.

A beautiful chapel in a peaceful place, conducive to meditation...
Some facts and dates.
In May 1682, when Louis XIV reigned over France and Pope Innocent XI was sitting in Rome, the Virgin appeared to Madeleine Serres and his five companions aged 8 to 13 years on the hillside of Lareu, current site of the chapel Our Lady of St Bernard.
Madeleine revealed that Virgin had requested the construction of a chapel at the place of its occurrence. She had added that someone would come from far away for this purpose. She also asked to repair the fountain that flowed there, so people could drink and wash, as patients who would receive this water would be relieved.
When the inhabitants of nearby villages heard the story, they came in large numbers and rumours of miracles spread, some backed by doctors.
However, due to the disbelief of the Bishop of Alan, the situation was blocked.
Six years later, in May 1688, a novice in Trappes Abbey : Pierre Cathiéry, yielding to a powerful and irresitible impulse, offered himself for the construction of the chapel.
He met with another refusal, but he moved to Montoulieu and gained the sympathy of many people, including noblemen who resolved to help him. Under pressure, the bishop finally agreed and ten months later, a chapel in the form of three-leaf clover was built in Lareu.
On October 5, 1794, the Convention ordered the destruction of all the chapels that were not parish churches. Our Lady of Saint Bernard was razed.

In 1912, the fountain found his today form. Many miraculous healings happened there.
After the First World War, the sanctuary was going to know a new boom.
The reconstruction of the chapel resumed in 1922, which was a very good year:
A Pieta dating from the sixteenth century that had always stood above the fountain had been stolen in May 1908, a theft that had saddened all the faithful very much.
One day in June 1922, the priest of Montoulieu received an anonymous parcel from Paris, containing the stolen Pieta! Today, it can be seen in its niche above the fountain.
The reconstruction lasted 5 years until a disagreement occurred between the priest of Alan and the priest of Montoulieu, who led the work. Then, everything stopped.
And the situation was blocked for 20 years... The work resumed after the Second World War with a powerful effort that brought all the neighboring towns together. During the winter of 1956-57, the porch was built and the building was then completely finished!
The great annual pilgrimages are on August 15 and Sunday closest to September 8.
