Loch Ard is only 1 mile from Aberfoyle on the Inversnaid and
Stronachlachar B829. The loch is in three parts which are joined by
beautifull waterways “The Narrows”. The ‘Water Lillies’ pool is one
of these small lochs to the East
The Loch is fresh water. The burn that flows out of it joins the
Duchray Water in Aberfoyle to become the Forth. Loch Ard is
approximately four kilometres long by two kilometres wide.
There is a sailing Club at the Western end as Loch Ard. It provides
excellent sheltered sailing water due to the protection of a valley
running roughly East-West. The views around the Loch are
magnificent, especially in Autumn, with Ben Lomond dominating the
horizon to the West. Fishing is allowed by permit from boats or
bank .The current course fish record for Perch caught in Scotland
is for a 4lb 14oz (2.210kg) perch in Loch Ard in 1989.. Loch Ard
also has quite a reputation for catching large pike.
Coming from Aberfoyle there is a track off the main road into the
wood where you can park at N 56 10.963 W 004 25.937. This is
just after Lariach and is hard to spot so drive slowly approaching
it. The cache could almost be described as a cache and dash,
however this would not do justice to the beauty of the
surroundings. So, take your time and enjoy the views, take
photographs or have a picnic. The owner of the wood allows access
but discourages camping and access for watersports. The cache is
easily reached on foot through the wood from the parking area.
To really appreciate the beauty of the lochs you need to see them
from a boat or canoe. The best place to launch a canoe is from the
Glassert aka “Echo Rock” and paddle through the narrows to the
cache location. * Congratulations to Clachanman for FTF
