The Wabasha Caves have been in use since the early 1840’s, when Lyman Dayton began mining the silica- rich sandstone for the making of glass. In the early 1900’s, Louis Lambert, a mushroom grower who had just arrived from Paris, bought the caves and soon turned them into the largest mushroom caves in the United States.
Josie and William Lehmann began to convert the cave into a nightclub in 1932 and a restaurant was set up in the cavern. It opened, as Prohibition ended, as the Castle Royal and received the first post-Prohibition liquor license in St. Paul. Famed musicians Cab Calloway, Dorsey brothers, and Henry James played the Castle Royal. Craps and poker took place secretly in the back rooms. Criminals such as Ma Barker, Baby Face Nelson and John Dillinger used St. Paul as a haven, reportedly spending some of the time at the Castle Royal. Dillinger was reportedly there dancing just a few weeks before F.B.I. agents at The Biograph Theatre in Chicago, Illinois, gunned him down in 1934.
Today, the caves are rented out for weddings, proms, and tours and The Wabasha Caves continue to be used by the living, as well as the dead. Legend has it that there was a 1934 triple-murder in the caves involving low-level Chicago gangsters, and that the murder was covered-up by the police. The bodies of the three dead gangsters were supposedly dragged into one of the other caves and buried there, either by the men who did the dastardly deed, or there are also reports that several mob-paid St. Paul police buried the bodies themselves.
Guests of events at the caves have reported that there a many apparitions that still remain there today:
1. An entity of a man wearing a panama hat goes about his business, and is seen inside the caves.
2. An entity of a man meets an entity of a woman in the bar area around 3:00 AM, for a nightcap, or a forbidden meeting?
3. While rehearsing for a play to be presented on the main stage, the actors involved saw an entity of a man sitting in the audience, watching them.
4. An entity of a woman is seen wandering around the caves, perhaps looking for someone or something.
