The Wildsee area is a 2.3 hectare space in an altitude of 909 meters. It is located in a plateau area between Bad Wildbad, Gernsbach and Forbach. Next to it is the smaller Hornsee (0.7 hectare). The whole area is in a protected nature reserve.
The lake is a swamp lake. The whole area is protected to make sure that e.g. special types of pines and other special types of animals and plants can grow uninfluenced.
After the last ice age (aprox. 10.000 years ago), the waterproof layers of colored sandstone led to the building of a swamp area. Through incomplete decomposition an up to 8 m high turf layer developed around the Wildsee. The higher the turf layer gets, the less nutrient is available for the plants growing on this layer. The result is a vegetation of only unambitious plants.

Der Wildsee mit einer Fläche von 2,3 ha befindet sich in einer Höhenlage von 909 m ü. NN auf einer Hochebene zwischen Bad Wildbad, Gernsbach und Forbach. Unmittelbar benachbart ist der kleinere Hornsee (0,7 ha). Die nächstgelegene Siedlung mit Straßenanschluss ist Kaltenbronn etwa 2 km südwestlich. Die Grenze zwischen den Gemeinden Gernsbach (Landkreis Rastatt) und Bad Wildbad (Landkreis Calw) verläuft durch den Wildsee und das zugehörige Naturschutzgebiet. Der Hornsee liegt auf Gernsbacher Gemarkung.
Am Ende der letzten Eiszeit (vor rund 10.000 Jahren) sorgten wasserundurchlässige Buntsandsteinschichten bei hohen Niederschlägen für Versumpfungen. Durch unvollständige Zersetzung entstand im Wildseemoor eine bis zu acht Meter tiefe Torfschicht. Je höher die Torfschicht, desto geringer wird das Nährstoffangebot für die auf dieser Schicht wachsenden Pflanzen. Das Ergebnis ist eine Vegetation relativ anspruchsloser Gewächse (Sträucher, Moose, Wollgräser).
