O Forte de São João da Barra, também designado por Forte
de São João Baptista e Forte da Conceição,
fica situado na freguesia de
C
abanas de
Tavira,
junto à Ria
Formosa. Este imponente exemplar de arquitectura militar
portuguesa é considerado Imóvel de Interesse Público.
O Forte de São João da Barra data
do século
XVII, reinado de D.
João
IV. A sua construção teve início durante a
Guerra da
Restauração, e é da iniciativa do
Conde de
Vale de Reis, em
1656.
Em
1670,
o forte é ampliado, ficando concluído em
1672.
O terramoto
de 1755, provoca vários estragos, mas o forte recebe nova
remodelação em
1793,
no reinado de D.
Maria
I.
Após as
lutas entre
absolutistas e liberais, o forte foi parcialmente
desactivado, mantendo-se uma pequena guarnição até
1897.
No início do
século
XX, o forte é totalmente desactivado e, em
1905,
é adquirido por particulares. Actualmente, o Forte de São João da
Barra é um empreendimento turístico.
A sua forma geométrica é quadrangular, ou em estrela de 4 pontas
com baluartes nos ângulos, e um fosso antecedendo a porta
principal.

The Fort of São João da Barra,
also designated by Fort of São João Baptista
and Fort of Conceição, is situated in the
parish of Cabanas in Tavira, near the Ria Formosa. This
imposing example of military Portuguese architecture is
considered a Property of Public
Interest.
The Fort of São João da Barra
dates of the century XVII, reigned of D. João IV. This
construction had beginning during the War of the Restoration,
and it is an initiative of the Count of Vale de Reis, in
1656. In 1670, the fort is enlarged, being ended in 1672. The
earthquake of 1755, provoke several destructions, but the
fort receives new remodelling in 1793, in the reign of D.
Maria I.
After the struggles between absolutist and
liberal, the fort was partially shut down, remaining a small
garrison until 1897. In the beginning of the century XX, the
fort is totally shut down and, in 1905, is acquired by
individuals. At present, the Fort of São João da Barra is a
tourist undertaking.
Its geometrical form is quadrangular, or in star
of 4 tips with ramparts in the angles, and a trench preceding
the principal door.
