Presidential Nicknames Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

greenwoodturner: Sadly, even after anchoring this one in place with wire, someone still managed to muggle it and steal the bison tube. Regrettably, we are archiving this one.

Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the listed coordinates. You must first pass a short history exam, before you will be able to determine the real cache coordinates.

With the presidential elections of 2008 rapidly approaching, it seems only appropriate that everyone should take a moment for a little history lesson.

Almost every president has had the honor (or dishonor) of earning one or more nicknames. To determine the final cache coordinates, you will need to determine the last name of the president associated with certain nicknames. Once you have correctly determined the president's last name, you can convert that into a number, by simply counting the number of letters in the last name.

Here is an example of how this works:

"Tricky Dick" is a nickname for Richard Nixon. Since "Nixon" contains 5 letters, the resulting value is '5'.

Simple ... right? If you get stuck, you should be able to find all of the answers by searching the internet. To complicate it (just slightly), some answers will require you to do some simple math, such as adding or subtracting the numeric values.

The final cache coordinates are: N44 4A.BCD W123 1E.FGH, where:

A = "Billy Possum" - "Napoleon of the Stump"

B = "The Galena Tanner"

C = "The Cyclone Assemblyman" - "Coiner of Weasel Words"

D = "Big Steve" + "His Fraudulency" - "The Wool Carder President"

E = "The Last of the Crooked Hats" - "The Resume Candidate"

F = "Publicola"

G = "Old Buck" + Arthur - "The Cincinnatus of the West"

H = "Haberdasher"

Once you think that you have correctly solved the puzzle, you can check your answer here.

As of 5/6/2012, I've changed 'G' - use "Arthur" as part of the answer, since the original nickname for Chester Arthur has conflicting answers depending on the website you use when researching this puzzle.

You are looking for a carefully hidden bison tube, which contains a log only; be sure to bring your own pen or pencil. Due to tree cover, you may have a difficult time getting an accurate reading; use your geosenses, and if necessary, the hint.

Please be sure to carefully rehide the cache, so that it will not be visible to the casual observer who might be walking this trail.

After dealing with continual problems with the cache becoming dislodged, and ending up in the mud, the cache is now anchored (by wire) to the hidey hold! The fir cone camo is no longer attached to the bison tube ... it is simply wedged into the hole, to help cover up the bison tube. Please be sure to wedge the bison tube (and the cone) firmly back into its hiding place!
