A micro cache in the vicinity of Snaily House, or Whiteslades as it was known. The remains of Snaily House is within the Forestry Commission boundary around Belliver, the cache site overlooks this area from Riddon Ridge. Park in the Belliver car park, or off the road after the bridge. If you want a circular walk you can go across the ridge, cross the river at the stepping stones near Laughter Hole and return through the plantation via the Snaily House back to the car park.
The story of Snaily House involves to elderly spinsters who lived there. Both appeared healthy, yet the house was neglected and they had no livestock or hens so how did they manage for food? Inquisitive locals spied on the sisters and saw them sat down to a meal of slimey black snails which they appeared to be enjoying very much. And so, the story goes, Whiteslades became known as the Snaily House. It seems that the reference to snails is in fact the black juicy Dartmoor slug. So you need never go hungry when out walking on Dartmoor......
