Thanks to the Washers who initiated the Shropshire Church Gem
series and have encouraged other cachers to add to it,
Staffordshire also has some wonderful Church Gems and here is one
of them. The views from the church are really lovely and the
adjoining Forton Hall is a beautiful residence.
All Saints at Forton
The north and east walls of the chancel date from the 11th century
and the rest of the north aisle from the 14th century. The lower
section of the tower was built in the 13th century while the upper
section was added about 1500. If you get chance to look inside you
can see the alabaster tomb of Thomas Skrymsher, Knight of Aqualate
and his wife, Anne. He died in 1633 and his wife in 1656, on the
side of the tomb there are images of their five sons and four
daughters.
The cache is not in the church grounds, park outside the church
and follow the public footpath/bridleway adjacent to the church.
Please take care to shut any farm gates and keep dogs on a lead as
you may encounter cattle and shetland ponies in some of the fields.
