O Hospital de Santo Isidoro, originalmente situado das
dependências do hospital termal, recebeu doentes pela primeira vez
em 1860. Instituído por legado de um benemérito, era na
terminologia da época um hospital de misericórdia, a exemplo
daqueles de que dispunham outros centros urbanos do país geralmente
mantidos por Misericórdias.
A 19 de Março de 1893, D. Carlos veio expressamente às Caldas
inaugurar com solenidade o novo edifício do Hospital de Santo
Isidoro relocalizado no Pinhal do Fiel Amigo, e colocar a primeira
pedra do futuro.
A data de 19 de Março de 1893 representou a consagração de Rodrigo
Marta Berquó. A inauguração do Hospital de Santo Isidoro por si
concebido e projectado, e executado sob a sua direcção com a
presença da família Real e do Governo foi o ensejo e a justificação
desse facto.
Este edifício agora centenário no qual são ainda bem visíveis
apesar da degradação sofrida nas últimas duas décadas os elementos
fundamentais da construção primitiva foi integrado num complexo
escolar, o da Escola Superior de Arte e Design das Caldas da Rainha
em que naquele espaço funciona recentemente a Biblioteca da
escola.
