Geocache Description:

There was a cache named Holcomb Trestle View Cache which was about .2 miles north of this cache location. This cache is much, much closer to the actual trestle. This trestle is fantastic and needed a new cache, there is a different cache near the old cache's location. PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB ON THE TRESTLE. This is #4 in a series of Railroad History Caches highlight history of active rail lines in Oregon

The Holcomb Creek Trestle was built by United Railways around 1910-1911. The URR was an electric interurban railway that ran from Portland to Wilkesboro, with a connection to Banks. Although it did have passenger service, its main commodity was lumber. Later on the SP&S railway purchased the line and added a connection to it's electric railway, the Oregon Electric. At some point in the 1930's the overhead wires probably came down and was served by steam and later diesel freight trains. The line was almost abandoned by Burlington Northern who inherited line. Currently the State of Oregon officially owns the right-of-way and shortline operator Portland & Western Railroad operates freight trains on the line.

The Trestle is about 60' feet high and about 1100 feet long. You will notice on each side of the trestle corrogated metal that goes from the top of the trestle to the bottom. Those are fire breaks. As the trestle is wood, fire is always a real possibility. This would help prevent the entire trestle from burning down..
