Kostel Mistra Jana Husa, kostel cirkve ceskoslovenske nebo take tzv. Dolni kostel je na prvni pohled nenapadna stavba, prestoze se jedna o nejstarsi kostel a jednou z nejstarsich staveb ve meste. Doporucuji vejit dovnitr a mozna vas interier a fresky prekvapi tak jako mne pred mnoha lety.
Puvodni stavba kostela sv. Jana Krtitele je jednou z nejstarsich pamatek Uherskeho Brodu. První zminky o kostele pochazeji ze 13. stoleti. Chram byl casto take nazyvan kostelem „Dolnim“ na rozdil od „Horniho“ pri dominikanskem klastere.
Pocatecni kuse zpravy o kostele ze stoleti 13. – 15. zacinaji nabyvat na cetnosti az po husitskych valkach, kdy prechazi do rukou utrakvistu, kteri pri nem provozovali skolu. To byl vsak kostel jiz po sve prvni goticke prestavbe, ktera byla dokoncena v roce 1494 kamenickym mistrem Pavlem Sekanym. Stavba tak rozsirena o pozdne gotickz presbytar se sakristii byla pozdeji doplnena stavbou veze, kterou v roce 1589 provedl zdejsi stavitel Mikulas Lorek. V obdobi pobelohorskem pak prechazi kostel do rukou katolicke cirkve a jsou na nem provadeny dalsi stavebni upravy. Jde predevsim o jeho barokni prestavbu z let 1666 – 1667, kdy kostel ziskava dnesni trojlodni podobu zasluhou farare Jana Vaclava Polontia. Pricinenim dekana Vaclava Halamka ziskava jeste v roce 1682 vez kostela novou stresni krytinu, ktera vsak byla i se strechou kostela ponicena jiz nasledujiciho roku pozarem za vpadu vojsk uherskeho magnata Imricha Takolyho. I pres znacne poniceni kostela jeho dalsi vetsi rekonstrukce pripadla az na leta 1715 – 1717.
V souvislosti s vybudovanim noveho farniho chramu Neposkvrneneho poceti Panny Marie na Dolnim rynku pozbyva kostel na svem vyznamu a od roku 1733 je uzivan jiz jen jako kostel filialni. Doba josefiskych reforem prinasi pak v roce 1784 narizeni o jeho odsveceni a kostel je vyuzivan nekolik desitek let jen jako sklad munice, pozdeji obili nebo jako hasicska zbrojnice. V roce 1898 je v jedne z jeho bocnich lodí umiteno mestske muzeum, v nemz jsou az do roku 1920 vystavovany exponaty z oblasti regionalni historie. Od roku 1920 je kostel v uzivani Ceskoslovenske cirkve, ktera jej, jako chram Mistra Jana Husa, spravuje do dnesnich dnu. V bocni lodi je ulozena prst z hrobu Jana Amose Komenskeho v Naardenu.

Mister John Hus’s church in Uhersky Brod, the church of the Czechoslovakian Hussite church or also so called “Lower” church is an inconspicuous building at first sight, although it is the oldest church and one of the oldest buildings in the town. I can just recommend you to enter the church and you might be surprised by the interior and frescos as I was many years ago.
The original building of the church of St. John Baptist, once the parish church is one of the oldest monuments in Uhersky Brod. The church was first mentioned in 13th century. It was often referred as „Lower“church, contrary to the „Upper“church at the Dominican Monastery.
Initial information from 13th and 15th centuries about the church, rather brief, got more frequent after Hussite wars, when it was held by Utraquists who also ran a school by the church. But it was already after its Gothic conversion completed in 1494 by a stonemason called Pavel Sekany, enlarging the building by a late Gothic presbytery with a sacristy. Later, in 1589 the building was completed by a tower build by a local mason Mikulas Lorek. Before 1620 the church got to the Catholic Church and other structural modifications we performed, especially its Baroque conversion in 1666 – 1667 when the church got it today image of a three-aisled temple thanks to the priest Jan Vaclav Polonius. The tower got new roofing as Dean Vaclav Halanek’s merit, damaged together with the roof of the church already the following year because of fire during the Hungarian invasion of Imrich Tököly’s hords. Even though the church was badly damaged, its major reconstruction did not take place until 1715 – 1717.
Since a new parish Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary was erected on the main square the Lower church lost its importance and from 1733 is used only as a subsidiary church. In 1784 it was deconsecrated as a consequence of Emperor Joseph’s reforms and used as an ammunition stock, later wheat stock or as a fire brigade station. In 1891 a local museum used one of its aisles to show exhibits of regional history until 1920. Since that year The Czechoslovakian Hussite Church has been using the church as Mister John Hus’s Church. The soil from Jan Amos Comenius’s grave in Naarden, the Netherlands, is deposited in one of the aisles.
