As águas termais caldenses têm suscitado, desde do século XVI, a
atenção da Química e da Medicina. No século XVIII, D. João V, ele
próprio frequentador assíduo do Hospital Termal, ordenou a sua
reedificação. O Hospital foi ainda importante na luta contra o
inimigo Espanhol, D. João IV aí se curou por duas vezes para com a
sua vida nos livrar da sujeição de Filipe IV Rei das Espanhas,
nelas se curaram ainda o Príncipe D. Afonso, Generais, Mestres de
Campo, Capitães, Tenentes, Alferes, Sargentos e numerosos soldados.

Nascidas das águas, as Caldas da Rainha floresceram graças a
criação de um grande hospital de âmbito nacional, em 1485. O
incentivo do poder central na sua evolução confirmou o estatuto de
vila a localidade e uma demarcação dos respectivos limites. A vila
cresceu ao ritmo do sucesso das suas termas, lugar simultaneamente
do povo, da aristocracia e da família real. Em meados do século
XVIII, o hospital foi reedificado e a vila recebeu uma série de
melhoramentos em infra-estruturas. Na segunda metade do século XIX,
as sucessivas administrações procuram uma aproximação ao melhor
termalismo do centro da Europa. O corolário deste trabalho
centralizou-se no final do século, quando se construíram novos
equipamentos que antecederam o período áureo das primeiras décadas
do séc. XX, quando também a vila se tornou cidade. Posteriormente,
o Hospital Termal sentiu os períodos de ascensão e queda do
termalismo português. Hoje em dia, ancora-se num património
insubstituível para traçar novas vias de modernização, assentes
numa lógica de compromisso entre a história e a contemporaneidade,
preservando a sua vocação no tratamento das doenças reumatologistas
e das doenças do aparelho respiratório superior
