Geocache Description:

Cache is not at the listed coordinates

Duluth is rich in streams - 42 named streams within the city limits, 12 of which are designated trout streams and all of which ultimately flow to Lake Superior. The steep drop down the hillside across bedrock makes for spectacular waterfalls, great hiking, and, of course, good geocaching.

This series of caches is dedicated to the 'hidden streams' of Duluth, those in out-of the-way places and occassionally underground!

Clarkhouse is one of those streams - with headwaters near Central High School, it was one the focal point of the spectacular 50 acre park pictured above, with a series of tiered waterfalls cascading through a stone pavilion. A summer storm that dropped three inches of rain in two hours and ripped a gorge through Duluth hillside ended this period of Duluth's history. The stream is now subterranean, with an outfall on the bay side of Park Point.

Find this cache by answering the following questions:

  • A. The year of the storm that sealed the fate of Clarkhouse Creek
  • B. The area of the Clarkhouse Creek watershed, in acres
  • C. What would have been the number of Great Lakes if Congress had designated Lake Champlain as a Great Lake, which, wisely, it didn't
  • D. The number of years that it takes a drop of water to work its way from Duluth to the Soo Locks (also known as "Residence Time")

This cache was placed for Lake Superior Day, held annually on the third Sunday in July to celebrate the world's largest freshwater lake. The Lake Superior Binational Forum has donated four unactivated Earth Day geocoins
for this event - this cache contains one of them!
