This cache is near the Observation building on the Manastash Ridge about 9 Mile SW of Ellensberg. This was a location of a DNR Fire Lookout site. This is one more Fire Lookout cache for the Wa. Fire Lookout Challenge.
From Ellensberg, take the Umtanum Road, It turns into the North Wenas Road. Keep heading West until you come the the Observatory Road. It is gated, but a Green Dot Road. You can drive all the way to the top. You will be able to see the Observatory building from a distance.
The DNR built a 2 story Smokehouse L.O. in 1942, and in 1962 built a 40ft tower. The Fire Lookout was destroyed in 1970.
Today this is the location of a Observation Station to study the Galaxy an Stars. The area is fenced off to keep people out. The day I placed the cache, it was manned. I could see a man through the windows on the North side of the building. He did not come out, so I could not visit with him. The Telescope door was closed.
The Cache is a Black 4" PVC pipe w/ caps. It is abouot 120 ft from where you can drive to. It is about 30ft. drop below the top.
