A traditional cache in a beautiful unspoilt location at the end of the Lin Peninsula with spectacular views of Lake Ohrid towards the Macedonia towns of Ohrid & Struga cradled under the forbidding walls of the Galicica mountains
Lake Ohrid covers 347sq km. It is the deepest lake in the Balkans with a maximum depth of 310m. Drained by the Black Drin, it has been rising over the last 100 years because sands deposited in the Drin due to human activitiy have reduced the river's capacity to drain the lake. Ohrid is rich in fish, particularly a unique member of the trout family, which is delicious to eat and is only also found in Lake Prespa and Lake Baikal in Siberia. In Ottoman times a special courier service carried the fish to the table of the Sublime Porte in Constantinople. The Lake is very rich in bird life, especially at migration times.There have been discoveries of Illyrian hilltop settlements in the vicinity of the Lake.
Lin is a charming unspoilt village on the shores of Lake Ohrid. The site has been inhabited since ancient times. On the acropolis above the village are archaelogical remains, including Roman & Byzantine paving and an early Christian church dating from the first half of the 6th C. Eight fine mosiacs were found here with designs of fish water birds & bees. When the church was built Lini may have been an island. The church shows eastern influence from Syria & Egypt. To find the cache I advise you to drive into Lin village where there is a small slipway where you can safely leave your vehicle. The locals will happily rent you a rowing boat for about 2000 leke (€16)for 3 hours. From there you can row out to the end of the peninsula, which is much fun than walking and allows you to see the myriads of fish and the odd water snake. Why not bring along snorkles like we did and dive from the boat?
