INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #622

"View From a Hill"

This quest will bring you to the Mount Zion Cemetery just south of the small town of Hall in northern Morgan County. This cemetery is mowed regularly but many of the headstones are grime covered and are very difficult to read. Fortunately, the headstones for a Revolutionary War soldier and a veteran of the War of 1812 are both readable.

Revolutionary War Veteran

Elijah Lacy was a member of the Virginia Militia and served for a term of 10 months during the Revolutionary War. He enlisted in 1778 at Goochland County Virginia. He commanding officers were Colonels Bland and Turner. He was granted a veteran's pension in 1831 and received an annual payment of $33.33.

War of 1812 Veteran

Aaron Kivett served in the 5th North Carolina militia during the War of 1812. He was a member of a company serving under Captain John Ramsour, also known as 'Gentleman John'. John's father, Jacob Ramsour owned a mill in North Carolina that was the site of a battle in the Revolutionary War between Torries and Patriots. Lord Cornwallis and his troops camped near the mill and forced Jacob to run his mill 7 days a week to provide food for the British troops.

John Ramsour's company was a participant in the Battle of New Orleans, which actually took place a few days after the Treaty of Ghent was signed, but before news had travelled back to the United States. This was the battle that helped make Andrew Jackson famous.
