Relatively easy cache over moderate terrain with spectacular views over Somerset and may include hard working steam engines thrown in for good measure. Clue given as tree cover may be a problem. This is a Permissive Footpath route, only accessible during railway opening times .
The permissive footpath linking Mendip Vale to Maesdown Road was opened in 2006 by Local author Sue Gearing and is an important part of the East Somerset Railway's infrastructure linking Mendip Vale Station to Maesdown Road.
**During summer, the plant growth is extremely high. You will need long trousers, and are likely to get stung, bitten and fall into animal holes. As of July 2013, I would only recommend the footpath for experienced walkers. Cachers with kids should definitely take the train! **
Park on the roadside grass verge by the footpath entrance, just by the bridge where Maesdown road crosses over the railway line. A sign marks the entrance at N51:10.797 W002:30.442.
Starting on higher ground the path affords magnificent views of both the line and the countryside towards Shepton Mallet with the prominent Wells transmitter in view to the right, standing on the brow of Penn Hill some 1002 feet above sea level.
The railway line climbs at a steep gradient of 1:56 here and you may see the spectacular sight of steam trains working hard up the bank.
The path later drops down below the level of the railway, which is now riding on an embankment, and passes a now disused underbridge. You might see foxes, deer, pheasant and buzzards in addition to the excavation evidence of rabbits.
Finally, the path climbs again above the railway line before entering Mendip Vale station.
