We placed this cache while on our annual vacation to Iceland... We chose Akranes because our family lives here and there was currently no cache in this part of Iceland!
There are two lighthouses located here: The oldest one was built in 1918 and was restored in 1992 by the Akranes Kiwanis Club. However, the old one is located closer to the water so a second lighthouse was built in 1946 a little closer to land. In September of 1905 there was a shipwreck here resulting in the loss of 11 lives (5 of whom were siblings). In 1998 a sculpture was made by Bjarni Thor Bjarnasson in memory of those who had lost their lives at sea.
On a clear day you can see the beautiful mountain Akrafjall and even Snaefellsjokull glacier. When its darker you can even see the city lights of Reykjavik (the capital of Iceland).
Cache is in a small glass jar a few meters from the new light house...
