GB: The Roverste Leij is an example of a meandering river. She has a simple channel, and consists of an order of curves.These curves have not remained in one spot, but have moved over time.Not only water level and stream speed had their influence; the most important causes of meandering are sedimentation and erosion. As the water runs trough the stream sediment goes along with it.In the bends in the stream the water on the inside curve goes slower so the sediment settles making muddy beaches where a great number of water insects live including the rare and almost extinct dragonfly the “bosbeekjuffer”.On the outside of the curves the quick running water “eats” away the riverbank making it steep and high.In this high riverbanks a rare (in Holland anyway) bird lives the Kingfisher or IJsvogel as it is calls in Dutch.Through these influences the course of the river changes constantly.Sometimes a curve in the river is eroded so far it cuts it self of creating a pond where amphibians find a habitat.This process goes on and on creating new curves, banks, beaches and ponds. To log this cache answers 2 questions and take a picture: 1: What evidence do you see here of sedimentation and/or erosion of the river curves. 2. Describe what you see here and how this may affect the stream. 3. Take a picture at N 51°28.985 E 005° 04.259 whit our GPS and yourself and two of the curves on the background. Mail me the answers and place the picture whit your log. If the log is correct it will not be removed. NL: De Rovertse Leij is een meanderende rivier. Ze heeft een enkelvoudige geul, en bestaat uit een aaneenschakeling van bochten.Deze bochten blijven niet op 1 plek liggen, maar verplaatsen zich in de loop van de tijd.Waterpeil en stroomsnelheid van het water hebben hier hun invloed op maar de belangrijkste oorzaken zijn sedimentatie en erosie.Als het water door de stroom gaat wordt er zand meegenomen.In de binnenbochten in de stroom stroomt het water minder snel waardoor het zand kan bezinken, waardoor modderige strandjes ontstaan waar waterinsecten zich thuis voelen zoals de zeldzame Bosbeekjuffer een bijna uitgestorven libel soort.In de buitenbocht wordt door het sneller stromende water de oever weg gespoeld waardoor hoge steile oevers onstaan.In deze oever nestelt de in Nederland zeldzame IJsvogel.Door deze invloeden verandert de loop van de rivier constant. Soms snijdt een bocht in de stroom zichzelf af waardoor een afsloten poel ontstaat waar amphibiën zich thuis voelen.Dit proces gaat door en door waardoor telkens nieuwe bochten, strandjes, oevers en poelen gecreërd worden. Om deze cache te mogen loggen moet je 2 vragen beantwoorden en een foto maken die je bij de log moet zetten, de antwoorden dient u te mailen. 1. Welk bewijs zie je hier van erosie en/of sedementatie. 2. Beschrijf wat je hier ziet en wat het effect op het stroompje zal zijn. 3. Neem een foto op N51°28.985 E 005° 04.259 uw GPS uzelf en de 2 bochten op de achtergrond. Mail me de antwoorden en log met een foto, indien correct wordt de log niet verwijderd.
