How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

This cache is designed to be located in the dark of night. After sun-down and before sun-up is the usual time, but a long solar eclipse would also suffice. The reflectors are visible in the daytime, not as reflections but as objects tacked on trees. If you wish to try the cache in the daytime you can, but you will miss the real fun of this cache. If you do find the cache in the daytime, so note that fact in your log.

For safety’s sake please do not attempt to locate this cache alone. Geocaching in the dark can be romantic, scary, or merely adventurous and fun, depending on your perspective and who your partner is. It’s more fun geocaching with someone else anyway. I would not recommend this cache for young children.

The trek to the final cache is about a mile. Every member of your party should have a strong flashlight. Dress appropriately for the evening hours which are usually cooler than the daytime in any season. Mosquitoes can be a summertime annoyance. Part of the way is through tall grass and small trees. Long pants and a long-sleeved shirt are recommended.

There are over a dozen caches in the Boyce Road / McAlpine Creek Greenway Parks. It might be a good idea to find a few of these caches in the daytime before attempting this one. Depending on which ones you found you will have a better feel for the parks’ paths when you attempt them in the dark.

The listed coordinates take you to a lighted parking area where you will enter the trail. Once on the trail, your first decision will be which way to go. Once you have made your decision you are on your way. The trek is in three parts:

Part One is a reflective trail to Stage One where you will find the coordinates to Stage Two.

Part Two is the hike from Stage One to Stage Two. No reflectors to guide you here, just a well-traveled path and your GPS receiver.

Part Three begins at Stage Two and takes you to cache.

The fire tacks are either white or red. Where you find two tacks together is where the trail changes direction. Each stage begins with two fire tacks of the same color. When you see three fire tacks you have found what you were looking for. To see the reflectors you must hold your flashlight at eye level. Holding the flashlight at the waist will not return you a reflection. From certain angles, some of the reflectors may be obscured by limbs, leaves, or vines that may have grown since placement.

Have fun and keep safe. BTW there are light sticks in the cache. Please take one for each finder and celebrate your way back to your cachemobile. FTF and 2TF goes to madkiwiman and WatsonTWD - 6-24-08. 3TF goes to loopedr1 - 6-29-08
