Castle of Rio

Rio except of the new impressive Rion-Antirion Bridge is also distinguished by the Castle of the Morea, built by Sultan Bayazid II in 1499.
Here the Turks made their last stand in 1828, holding out for three weeks against the Anglo-French forces. Along with the Castle of Roumeli on Antirion's shore opposite, it guarded the narrows leading into the Gulf of Corinth.

In 1532 it was taken by Andrea Doria, while in 1603 the Knights of Malta caused significant destructions. In 1687 it was taken by the Venetians and in the early 18th century they repair and extended the fortifications of the fortress according to the bastion system, giving it its current form.
Today the castle is renovated and it's worth a visit. Into the castle there is also a byzantine church and a modern small theater where take places various events.
The view of the bridge Rio-Antirio from inside the castle is exciting. The entrance to the castle is free and it is open daily from 08:30 - 15:00 except Monday.

The cache is a small metallic box with a powerful magnet and you can see its initial contents in this photo.
