English RISIN OG KELLINGIN – The Giant and the Giantess North of
Eiði, on the north-western tip of the island of Eysturoy, not far
from the steep coast, stand two mighty stone pillars which are
called Giant and Giantess. The Giant further out by the surf and
the Giantess with legs apart nearer the land. When the sea is calm,
it is possible to pass through the cliffs in boat. This is the
story of these two figures who were turned into stone: Iceland
wanted to pull the Faroe Islands, which are alone out in the North
Atlantic, close to it. Thus Iceland commissioned a Giant and his
wife to carry out the plan. As ordered, the two Giants reached the
outermost north-western mountain Eiðiskollur. The Giant stayed in
the sea while the Giantess climbed up the mountain to bind the
Faroe Islands together and then to push them onto the Giant's back.
Her first hold was so powerful that the northern part of the
mountain Eiðiskollur split. She then tried to fasten the rope to
another part of the mountain. However, this too involved
difficulties. The base of the mountain was firm and the islands
could not easily be moved. The story goes on to say that the
Giantess was still on the mountain at dawn. She was afraid of the
light of day and therefore hurried to come down to the Giant
quickly. He was still in the sea waiting for her. Unfortunately,
they had spent too much time on the preparations for in the very
moment in which they began their journey home, the Giant in front
and the Giantess behind him, the sun came up in all its glory out
of the sea and turned them both to stone. They are still here
today, looking towards their home with longing without being able
to return.
Dansk RISIN OG KELLINGIN – Kæmpen og Kællingen Nordvest for
Eiði, på øen Eysturoy, står to mægtige stensøjler ikke langt fra
fjeldet, de kaldes for Risin og Kellingin. Han står længere ude
foran brændingen, og hans kone står med spredte ben tættere på
land. Når der er vindstille, kan man sejle imellem klipperne.
Følgende historie fortælles om disse to forstenede skikkelser:
Island havde til hensigt at trække Færøerne, som ligger ensomt ude
i Nordatlanten, tættere hen til sig. Derfor blev de to bedt om at
udføre denne opgave. De nåede det yderste nordvestlige bjerg
Eiðiskollur, som aftalt. Kæmpen blev stående i havet, mens hans
kone klatrede op på bjerget for at binde Færøerne sammen for siden
at skubbe dem op på ryggen af kæmpen. Første gang tog hun så
voldsomt fat, at den nordlige del af bjerget Eiðiskollur revnede.
Derpå forsøgte hun at fastgøre rebet et endet sted på bjerget. Men
det var også forbundet med vanskeligheder. Bjergets sokkel var
fast, og øerne ikke nemme at flytte. Det berettes videre, at
“Kællingen” stadig var oppe på bjerget, da morgenen begyndte at
gry. Hun var bange for dagslyset og skyndte sig derfor ned til
Kæmpen, som stadig stod i havet og ventede på hende. Desværre havde
de brugt for megen tid på forberedelserne, for i samme øjeblik, som
de begav sig hjemad, Kæmpen forrest og hans kone bagved, steg solen
op af havet i al sin glans og forstenede dem begge. Her står de
stadig i dag med længsel i retning af deres hjemland uden
nogensinde at få det at se igen.
Francaise RISIN OG KELLINGIN – Le Géant et la Commère Au
nord-est de la ville d´Eiði sur l´île d´Eysturoy, à Proximité de la
montagne, se dressent deux énormes colonnes rocheuses que l´on
surnomme le Géant et la Commère (Risin et Kellingin). 'Lui' se
trouve af-delà des brisants, tandis que 'sa femme', plus près de la
côte, se tient les jambes écartées. Par temps calme, il est
possible de naviguer entre ces rochers. La légende de ces deux
personnages pétrifiés est la suivante: L´Islande voulait rapprocher
d´elle les Îles Féroé qui sont isolées au millieu de l´Atlantique
Nord. La tâche fut confiée à nos deux personnages. Ils arrivèrent,
comme convenu, au pied de la montagne Eiðiskollur à l´extrémité du
nord-ouest. Le Géant resta dans la mer tandis que sa femme escalada
la montagne pour faire un noeud autour des Îles féroïennes et les
mettre ensuite sur le dos de son mari. Au premier essai, elle avait
tellement de vigeur que la montagne se fendit au Nord. Elle tenta
alors de trouver un autre point d´attache, mais ceci s´avéra
compliqué; le socle de la montagne était bien ancré et les îles
difficiles à remuer et, d´après la légende, lorsque le jour se
leva, la Commère se trouvait toujours sur la montagne. Elle
craignait la lumière du jour et se précipita dans la mer vers le
Géant qui l´attendait. Malheureusement, leurs efforts leur avaient
fait perdre trop de temps et, au moment de repartir, les rayons du
soleil levant pétrifièrent le Géant et la Commère que marchaient
l´un derrière l´autre. Depuis lors, ils scrutent inlassablement
l´horizon en soupirant après leur pays natal qu´ils ne reverront
jamais.
Deutsh RISIN OG KELLINGIN – Der Riese und die Riesin Nördlich
von Eiði, an der Nordwestspitze der Ostinsel Eysturoy, stehen nicht
weit von der Steilküste entfernt, zwei mächtige Steinsäulen, welche
Riese und Riesin genannt werden. Der erstere weiter draussen vor
der Brandung und die Riesin mit gespreitzten Beinen näher am Land.
Wenn Windstille herrscht kann man mit dem Boot hindurchfahren. Über
diese beiden zu Stein gewordenen Gestalten wird folgendes
berichtet: Island hatte die Absicht, die einsam im Nordatlantik
schwimmenden Färöer Inseln zu sich heranzuziehen. So beauftragte
Island einen Riesen und dessen Frau, das Vorhaben zu vollenden.
Beide errichten auftragsgemäss den aussersten nordwestlichen Berg
Eiðiskollur. Der Riese blieb im Meer stehen, währen die Riesin den
Berg erklomm, um die Färöer Inseln zusammenzubinden und sie dann
dem Riesen auf den Rücken zu schieben. Ihr erster Griff war so
kräftig, dass der nördliche Teil des Berges Eiðiskollur sich
abspaltete. Daraufhin versuchte sie das Seil am einer anderen
Stelle des Berges zu befestigen. Aber auch das war mit
Schwierigkeiten verbunden. Das Bergsockel war fest und die Inseln
nicht leicht zu bewegen. Es wird weiter berichtet, dass sich die
Riesin noch beim Morgengrauen auf dem Berg befand. Sie fürchtete
die Tageshellle und deshalb beeilte sie sich, schnell zum Riesen
hinunterzukommen, welcher, noch im Meer stehend, auf sie wartete.
Leider hatten sie für die Vorbereitungen zu viel Zeit benötigt,
denn im selben Augenblick als sie sich auf den Rückweg begaben, der
Riese voran und hinter ihm die Riesin, stieg die Sonne in vollen
Glanze aus dem Meer empor und versteinerte beide. Hier stehen sie
heute noch und blicken sehnsüchtig ihrer Heimat entgegen, ohne sie
wieder erreichen zu können.
