Black Duck Marsh is
an area of reed-beds and drier grasslands in the centre of
Swanscombe Peninsula West, North Kent. Several rare and uncommon
species have been found. Amongst others are nine different bees and
wasps, including the brown banded carder bee (Bombus humils) and
the bee wolf (Philantus triangulum), which is actually a wasp that
hunts bees to feed its larvae. You may also find a rare moth - the
six-belted clearwing (Bembecia ichneumoniformis) which mimics a
wasp. Other notable species are the water vole and the
aforementioned common lizard.
There's parking
available on a layby in Manor Way at N 51° 27.438 E 000° 19.113
which has CCTV for the lorries that use it. Go over the rather
bizarre steps at the side of the layby to join the
footpath.
