An aquatic diving bird, the duck floats on the water thanks to the air under its plumage and feathers. A specialized fat layer and dense, waterproof feathers help it to maintain appropriate body temperature in cold water.
There is one unique ability to birds alone, especially geese and ducks, which is one of the strongest forces in nature. It is called the imprint. No one really understands what happen inside a bird's brain when imprinting occurs, but the results are unmistakable. Basically a gosling or duckling knows that it is the same species as whatever living creature larger than itself it sees upon hatching or shortly after. If the bird sees a human, it will be a human. Therefore, not dogs or cats, but geese and ducks are the most natural animal companions to humans.
A noisy species, the male has a nasal call and the female the quack, quack, quack, quack always asociated with ducks. Mallards form pairs usually in october or november and stay together until the female lays eggs, at which time she is left by the male.
