Geocache Description:

The church of ST. JAMES is a modern building in 13th-century style of flint with stone dressings, the chancel being all of stone. It was erected on an old site in 1862, the eastern portion being again rebuilt in 1887, and consists of a chancel, north and south transepts, north vestry, and an aisle less nave with a south tower, whose lower stage serves as a porch. The roofs tiled. The top stage of the tower is of wood and has a small octagonal spire covered with shingles.

The Rebuilding of Barkham Church 1859-1887.
The population of Barkham had risen from 185 in 1801 to 274 in 1851, and it was felt that the old fourteenth century (mainly) wooden church (with seating for 117) was too small and dilapidated for the needs of the parish and the church was rebuilt (with seating for 159) on the site of the medieval church in 1859-1861. The old church was pulled down in 1859, and the following (composite) account of the laying of the corner stone of the new church. Unfortunately, no record was made of the old building before it was demolished, The rebuilding took about 18 months, for this flint and free stone, Gothic character, with an entrance at the west side, under the tower.
