Questa cache vi farà visitare l'eremo della Spelonca, in mezzo al verde sui Monti Pisani.
This cache will bring you to visit the hermitage of Spelonca, in the woods on Monti Pisani.
Vicino al passo di Croce, dove transitava l'antica via di comunicazione tra Pisa e Lucca, si trova l'antico eremo della Spelonca, che può essere raggiunto a piedi dal passo stesso. E' situata nel territorio Lucchese ma è comunque vicinissimo al confine con la provincia di Pisa, la zona viene identificata come eremo di S. Giuliano di spelonca, oppure di S. Giorgio.
Fù fondato nel 1190 dagli eremiti neri ( dai preti Honestus e Dulcis) i quali non erano veri e propri eremiti (eremos=solo) dediti solo alla meditazione, difatti erano gruppi di monaci che vivevano insieme in povertà in luoghi isolati e si dedicavano all'assistenza religiosa della gente della zona che non riusciva a raggiungere le chiese. In Toscana e soprattutto sui Monti Pisani (identificati anche come Mons Heremita) c'erano molti insediamenti eremitici tanto che, i monti compaiono sia in un affresco nel Camposanto monumentale di Pisa, sia in uno nella chiesa di S. Agostino a San Gimignano.
La costruzione in questione è una chiesetta ad aula unica; la facciata e la volta risalgono al 1800 mentre le strutture sono di origine medievale.
Vicino alla chiesetta, caso non molto frequente vi sono delle strutture che sono state ricavate direttamente nella roccia; come una cisterna a bocca quadrangolare, oppure una scalinata con i fori di supporto per un cancello, infine una vasca circolare circondata da canalette ed incastri.
Si possono notare inoltre, vari vani che servivano probabilmente come base per strutture dell'eremo, ed ancora strutture del genere sembrano esistere oltre l'apertura della grotta sul lato destro.

Per raggiungere la Spelonca si può arrivare in macchina fino al Passo di Dante (da Santa Maria del Giudice seguire la strada per il quagliodromo), da qui a piedi basta seguire il sentiero per il passo di Croce e poi per la Spelonca. Passerete davanti a dei ruderi di case, superateli e poi proseguite sulla destra sempre seguendo il sentiero 00 (bianco-rosso). In tutto sono circa 1.5 km abbastanza agevole da fare.
La cache è nelle immediate vicinanze della chiesa (purtroppo oggi un pò rovinata...), il segnale GPS è buono e non dovrebbero esserci grossi problemi. Si prega di riposizionare bene la cache, in modo che non cada dal suo alloggiamento.

Near to passo di Croce, where was the old way of communications from Pisa and Lucca, there is the old hermitage of Spelonca, where you can go by a walk from the passo of Croce. It is in Lucca's territory, but is near to the Pisa province; this area is identified like Hermitage of S.Giuliano di spelonca, or of S.Giorgio.
It was founded in 1190 from the black hermits (from priests Honestus and Dulcis) that was not real hermits addicted only to meditation, but monks that lived together in indigence in isolated places, and was employed in the religious assistance from the people in the nearest that cannot reach the churchs.
In Toscana and especially on Pisan Mountains (also named Mons Heremita) there was many hermitage places, in fact the mounts appears in a fresco in the monumental cemetery of Pisa, and in another fresco in yhe church of S.Agostino in San Gimignano.
The Spelonca is a little church; the frontage and the vault was build in 1800's and the other structures was made in Middle Ages.
Near the church there is some structures that was builded directly in the stone, like a cistern with rectangular mouth, a flight of steps with holes to support a gate, and finally a rounded pool with little canals.
There was also some other structures that was probably bases from other buildings near the hermitage; some structures seems to exists after the entrance of the cave on the right side.

To reach the Spelonca you can reach Passo di Dante by car (from Santa Maria del Giudice follow the street from Quagliodromo), from here proceed walking on the street from passo di Croce and then from La Spelonca. You have to pass in front of some ruined houses, after these you must proceed on the right following the way with red and white markings. There are 1.5 km not difficult to make.
The cache is in the immediate proximity of the church (today it is a bit ruined..), the GPS signal is good and there must be no problems to found it. Please pay attention to replace the cache accurately, so it cannot fall down of its place.
