Jørn Utzon er født d. 9. april 1918 i København. Sammen med sine forældre og storebror flyttede han som spæd til Aalborg, da hans far Aage Utzon fik arbejde som skibsingeniør på Aalborg værft. Familien boede i starten i en lille lejlighed i Vendelbogade. Senere flyttede de til en murermestervilla på Nørre Trandersvej i Vejgård.
Jørn gik på den private Klostermarkskole og senere på Aalborg Katedralskole, hvor han, pga. ordblindhed, fik årgangens dårligste studentereksamen. Jørn Utzon har fortalt, at han ofte gik fra skolen langs havnen til værftet, hvor han dryssede rundt og så sin far arbejde. I fritiden sejlede den unge Utzon på fjorden, som medlem af Aalborg Søspejdere.
I 1937 flytter Jørn Utzon til København, da han kommer ind på arkitektskolen. Senere samme år flytter resten af familien også fra Aalborg, da Aage Utzon får arbejde på Helsingør værft.
Jørn Utzons karriere tager først for alvor fart, da han i 1957 i en alder af 38 år overraskende vinder den internationale konkurrence om Sidney Operahuset. På grund af voldsom politisk modstand og mangel på penge må han dog i 1966 forlade Operahuset ufuldendt. Ud over skulpturelle og monumentale offentlige bygninger som Operahuset og parlamentsbygningen i Kuwait omfatter hans produktion også billige arbejderboliger som Kingohusene og Fredensborghusene samt privatboligerne på Mallorca, Can Lis og Can Feliz.
Jørn Utzon døde 90 år gammel d. 29. november 2008.

Utzoncentret er et videnscenter for arkitektur og design. Centret er multifunktionelt og indeholder bl.a. udstilling, værkstedshal, cafe, auditorium, bibliotek og arkiv med tegninger og modeller over projekter udført af Jørn Utzon. Centeret er en komposition af flere forskellige bygningskroppe med markante tagformer, der tegner bygningens profil.
Jørn Utzon har sammen med sin yngste søn Kim tegnet centret. Jørn Utzon husker, at det altid blæser ved havnen i Aalborg. Derfor indeholder bygningskomplekset også en gårdhave, hvor man kan sidde beskyttet for vinden, men kan samtidig nyde udsigten til fjorden tværs igennem huset. Utzoncentret ligger i Utzonparken, som udover kollegieboliger er en åben grøn park, som er et af de nye grønne områder der indgår i Aalborgs nye havnefront.

Jørn Utzon was born on 9th of April, 1918 in Copenhagen. Together with his parents and older brother he soon moved to Aalborg, when his father Aage Utzon got a job as a naval engineer on a shipyard in Aalborg. At first the family lived in a little flat, later they moved to a house in the suburbs of Aalborg.
Jørn went to a local private school, later a public upper secondary school. He got a degree with rather poor results due to the fact, that he is dyslexic. Jørn Utzon often walked along the harbour, on his way from the school to the shipyard, where his father worked. As Jørn grew older he became a skillful yachtsman.
In 1937 Jørn Utzon moved back to Copenhagen as he started studying at the Copenhagen School of Architecture. Later the same year the rest of family joined Jørn, because Aage Utzon got employed at Helsingør shipyard.
In 1957 Utzon won a design competition, when he designed a new opera house in Sydney with a dramatic design that brought him international fame. The construction, however, posed a variety of problems. He resigned from the project in 1966. Among the famous works of Utzon is also the Kuwait National Assembly, and he is also known for designing more humble housings.
Jørn Utzon died on the 29th of November 2008.

The Utzon Center is a center for architectural research and knowledge. The Center is multi functional and houses among other things exhibitions, conference center, library, lecture hall, workshop, and café. The Utzon Center contains several buildings with high sculptural roofs.
Jørn Utzon designed the center co-working with his son Kim. Jørn Utzons´s memories about the windy harbour front in Aalborg inspired him to create a courtyard in the middle of the building. This courtyard has a southern court environment. It shelters from the wind, and at the same time it offers a view of the waterfront through the windows in the building. The Utzon Center is situated in the Utzon Park, which, besides student accommodation, is a park open to the public. The area is part of a plan for an entire new harbor front by the Limm Fjord.
