Em
meados do século XVIII a marinha real inglesa navegava ao longo da
costa da Ericeira, quando foi surpreendida por uma forte
tempestade. Sentindo-se perdidos evocaram a sua fé a Nossa Senhora
da Piedade, santa protectora da sua frota. Fizeram assim a promessa
de construção de uma capela no ponto mais alto em troca da sua
salvação.
Nasceu então em 1758, junto do Monte Marçabel, a Capela de Nossa
Senhora da Piedade. Nesta capela começaram a ser feitas, por ordem
Del Rei, feiras francas nos dias de São Tiago e Santa Ana.

A estas feiras acorriam feirantes e peregrinos, sobretudo da zona
saloia. Em 1890 a capela foi ampliada, tomando a forma que hoje
apresenta.
Para homenagear a santa padroeira os habitantes das localidades
próximas organizam, em meados de Agosto, os já tradicionais
festejos que se mantém há vários anos. O povo sai à rua e a Nossa
Senhora da Piedade percorre as ruas da freguesia. Muitas pessoas
vêm a esta festa, e aproveitam para cumprir promessas. A população
enche o recinto e prova as deliciosas comidas tradicionais
sintrenses.

In the middle of the XVIII century Royal Navy sailed along the
coast of Ericeira, when it was surprised by a strong storm. They
Felt lost and evoked his faith in Nossa Senhora da Piedade, saint
protectress of his fleet. They have done well the promise of
building a chapel at the highest point in return for their
salvation.

Thus was born in 1758, close by the Monte Marçabel, the Chapel of
Nossa Senhora da Piedade. In this chapel began to be made free
trade fairs, in order the King, in the days of São Tiago and Santa
Ana. These fairs came merchant and pilgrims, especially the
“saloia” region. In 1890 the chapel was expanded,
taking the form we have today.
To honor the Saint protectress the inhabitants of nearby villages
organize, in mid-August, the traditional celebrations which a long
while ago. The people comes out to the streets and Nossa Senhora da
Piedade through the streets of the parish. Many people come to this
festival, and advantage to fulfil promises. The population fills
the sanctuary and the delicious traditional food of
Sintra.
