Trempealeau History
Trempealeau is named after Trempealeau Mountain- a nearby bluff completely surrounded by the Mississippi River. After an 1888 fire destroyed Trempealeau’s business district, six surviving buildings, including the Historic Trempealeau Hotel, were moved to form the present Main Street district, which today is on the National Register of Historic Places.
At the south edge of the Village is Lock and Dam No. 6 with an observation platform offering close views of lock operations. A fishing barge is anchored below the dam. The Trempealeau Lakes, a chain of five small spring-fed lakes, are also popular for fishing and canoeing.
Two miles northwest is Perrot State park, named for fur trader Nicolas Perrot, who wintered here in 1685-86. Set at the junction of the Mississippi and Trempealeau Rivers, the park features soaring bluffs with stunning views of the river valley, family campgrounds, picnic areas, a nature center and several miles of hiking and cross county ski trails. The park is open year round.
Close by you’ll find the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge, managed by the U.S Fish & Wildlife Service. The 5,600 acre refuge is a major resting, breeding, and feeding grounds for migratory waterfowl, including ducks, geese, herons and egrets. Two self-guided nature trails and a five mile long driving tour provide wonderful opportunities for viewing wildlife. The Refuge is open year round, during daylight hours.
The Great River Road State Bicycle Trail takes you through the backwaters of the mighty Mississippi along this 24 mile scenic corridor once traveled by trains. Built on an abandoned Chicago-Northwestern Railroad line, the trail has a finely crushed limestone surface suitable for biking, hiking, snowmobiling, cross county skiing and snowshoeing. There is something new and exciting to see each season of the year, so bring your binoculars and your camera.
