Geocache Description:

Part of the SideTracked series of caches hidden near railway stations. You are looking for a small cylindrical container hidden just outside of Great Malvern station.

When we attended the SideTracked in Brum Event we were given a couple of caches to extend the SideTracked series. So we put the first one here, just outside Great Malvern railway station. On 22nd August we decided to change the container to a small so it can now take small TBs and coins and has a few trade items.

Great Malvern railway station is a gem on the Great Western Railway situated on the line between Worcester and Hereford opened in 1861. Unlike other stations, which were built to standard GWR specifications, this was specially designed by the architect Edward Wallace Elmslie for Lady Emily Foley. Lady Foley was the major land owner in Victorian Malvern and wanted an impressive structure to welcome rail travellers to the town. One of the station waiting rooms was built specially for her and is now the Lady Foley Tea Rooms.

It is well worth looking at the structure and decoration, especially the tops of the columns. At the Worcester end of the Hereford platform is a gateway, now closed, leading to a tunnel to the old Imperial Hotel on the road above. Known as the 'worm', this allowed 1st class travellers to leave the station without mixing with the 2nd and 3rd class passengers. On the Worcester platform there is an ancient weighbridge still in situ used in the past to weigh luggage.

The cache is hidden outside the station on the southbound platform side next to a tree in some greenery by a path. For those not arriving by train there is the carpark or plenty of street parking on the other side.
