The cave system in Demanovska valley includes some 30 caves and is the largest cave system in Slovakia extending to almost 35km (22mi). In was formed in the middle-triassic guttenstein limestone along the tectonic faults by the river Demanovka. The continuos submersion of the subterranean stream of Demanovka into the limestone base during the pleistocene created 9 horizontal levels in the heights 0-147m (482ft) over the present water level of Demanovka. In the emptied cavities the continuos process of flowstone creation is still observed.
Demanovska Ice Cave itself was known already in the Middle Ages. First explicit written mention dates back to 17th century, but we can assume that first mentioned opening to cave in Demanova Valley in Esztergom Chapter document from 1299 also references this cave although it does not relate to a specific cave.
The cave was open to public already in the half of the 19th century, we can find signatures of important persons of the Slovak history from this period preserved on the walls.
The length of the Demanovska Ice Cave is almost 2km (1.2mi). Three levels with vertical extent of 57m (187ft) can be observed. The cave spaces have been modelled by Demanovka river and reshaped by collapses and frost weathering.
Flowstone decoration was preserved in several places of the cave. It is, however, considerably destroyed by frost weathering in the glaciated part of the cave. Sinter formations are coloured into gray up to black from soot of tar torches, oil burners and paraffin lamps, which were used until 1924.
The most interresting phenomenon of this cave is its ice decoration. Ice fill (floor ice, ice columns, stalactites and stalagmites) is found in the lower parts of the cave, mainly in the Kmet’s Dome.
The cave is open to public from May 15th to the end of September and is generally closed on mondays. I suggest to check the opening times in advance on the webpage of the cave.
Warning: The temperature in the lower parts of the cave does not exceed 3ºC (37ºF) even in the summer months. This can cause chilling stress to the human organism, so better take warm cloth and footwear even if it's hot outside...

Demanovsky jaskynny system zahrnujuci asi 30 jaskyn je so svojou dlzkou takmer 35km najrozsiahlejsim jaskynnym systemom na Slovensku. Bol vyhlbeny vodami Demanovky v guttensteinskych vapencoch stredneho triasu na tektonickych poruchach. Postupnym zarezavanim sa podzemneho toku Demanovky do vapencoveho podkladu sa v priebehu pleistocenu vytvorilo 9 horizontalnych urovni vo vyskach 0-147m nad terajsou hladinou Demanovky. Vo vyprazdnenych dutinach sa sustavne vytvaraju kvaplove utvary.
Samotna Demanovska ladova jaskyna bola znama uz v stredoveku. Prva pisomna zmienka je zo 17.storocia, ale mozeme predpokladat, ze opis jaskynnych otvorov v Demanovskej doline v listine Ostrihomskej kapituly z roku 1299 sa tiez vztahuje na tuto jaskynu i ked ziadnu konkretnu jaskynu neuvadza.
Jaskyna bola po prvy krat otvorena pre verejnost uz v polovici 19.storocia, z tohto obdobia su dodnes zachovane na stenach jaskyne podpisy znamych osobnosti slovenskej historie.
Dlzka zameranych casti jaskyne dosahuje takmer 2km. Rozlieha sa v troch vyvojovych urovniach s vyskovym rozdielom 57m. Jaskynne priestory pozostavaju z casti vymodelovanych riekou Demanovkou a priestorov dotvorenych rutenim a mrazovym zvetravanim.
Na viacerych miestach sa zachovala povodna kvaplova vyzdoba, v zaladnenych castiach jaskyne je vsak znacne poskodena mrazovym zvetravanim. Sintrove utvary su na povrchu sfarbene do siva az cierna sadzami smolnych fakiel, olejovych kahancov a petrolejovych lamp, ktore sa pouzivali az do roku 1924.
Najzaujimavejsia na jaskyni je jej ladova vyzdoba. Ladovu vypln (podlahovy lad, ladove stlpy, stalaktity a stalagmity) nachadzame v najspodnejsich castiach jaskyne, najma v Kmetovom dome.
Jaskyna je otvorena pre verejnost od 15.maja do konca septembra okrem pondelkov. Odporucam overit si predom otvaracie hodiny na stranach jaskyne.
Upozornenie: Teplota v najnizsich castiach jaskyne neprekracuje ani v letnych mesiacoch 3ºC. Velky rozdiel teplot moze sposobit zataz na ludsky organizmus, pripravte si preto vhodne oblecenie a obuv i ked je von horuco...
