Geocache Description:

St. Meinard's island

On the island you'll find the ruins of the oldest stone church in Latvia. It was built in 1184 AD. From here St. Meinard started to spread Christianity all over Livonia.
Initially the church stood on 15 meters high dolomite cliff on the riverside of Daugava but since the building of dam of Riga hydro-power station in 1975, the place where the ruins stand became an island. Now it has a name of the man who built the church - St. Meinard's island.
Once a year in August when some service works is going on in Riga hydro power-station and the water level is lowered, it is possible to get on the island by feet - like it once was.

Official conservation work began in 1976 and in 2003 a protective cover was constructed to help reduce the effects of weathering.

Attention, this is national scale cultural monument!
The visitors are asked to act carefully and with respect to cultural monument. For intentional or accidental damage can be applied administrative liability.

Cache itself is a small plastic box, containing small logbook and pencil, pencil sharpener and wet absorber.
