This cache is rated three for terrain due to overgrowth in summer.
While the trail circling the pond is generally level, vegetation in the area can be quite dense. There are also muddy areas near the waterline and steep embankments that may be hidden by tall grass in summer. Do not park at the nearby apartment complex. Park on a nearby side street and enjoy the walk.
This little known park is called Suburban Ponds. The name of the park was unknown to even myself until I made inquiries with Ramsey County Parks and Recreation. It was excavated some years ago to handle water runoff from the area. The overflow runs underground to Battle Creek and from there to the Mississippi River.
The pond is a fully functioning wetland ecosystem. The breeding activities of the local wildlife are very easy to observe. Canada Geese (Branta canadensis) breed in the spring and are very protective of their young. Do not approach them when they have young nearby. Western Painted Turtles (Chrysemys picta bellii)
are very visible during the nesting period in June. Feel free to observe them nesting, but do not touch them unless they are on the road and need to be moved. There are many species of amphibians present in the area, and you may be lucky enough to spot one of our local snake species.
There is a lot of litter in the area, so I have stocked the cache with some garbage bags. Please feel free to use them for Cache In Trash Out.
This park sees only light foot traffic, but watch out for firefighting muggles from nearby Station 24. They usually use the trail in pairs.
This cache has been approved by Ramsey County Parks and Recreation Department.
