A sneakily hidden City Centre cache, requiring Maximum Stealth to retrieve. Please enjoy the park but look for the cache from outside the railings.
St. Andrew Square in the centre of Edinburgh is an integral part of the design of the New Town. The garden includes the Melville Monument - Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville (April 28, 1742 – May 28, 1811) - and as of 4/4/2008 is open to the public.
The gardens have been redesigned and replanted and now includes a reflecting pool and a traditional Georgian Coffee Kiosk. Having previously only been available to the residents and businesses of St. Andrew Square, it has now been leased to The City of Edinburgh Council.

The imposing monument to Lord Melville was erected in 1823, it was designed by William Burn and modelled on Trajan's column in Rome (continuing with the literary theme of recent caches in Edinburgh, the foundations where built with advice from Robert Louis Stevenson's father Thomas who was a lighthouse engineer).It was paid for by members of the Royal Navy.

Not many people have heard of Lord Melville and often wonder why he has such an imposing monument. He was born in Dalkeith and educated at the Royal High School and Edinburgh University. He studied law and became Solicitor General for Scotland in 1766 and Lord Advocate in 1775. he was elected an MP in 1774 and served in the cabinets of William Petty and Pitt the Younger. He served as secretary of state for the Home Department, War Secretary and later 1st Lord of the Admiralty. He was the last person to be impeached in the UK - due to financial irregularities in the running of the Admiralty - although he was aquitted by the House of Lords.
The gardens are currently open from 08:00-16:00 although the cache is available 24hrs a day, in fact the cache is most accessible from outside the garden. It can easily be accessed by wheelchair cachers. Please bring your own pen (the log is "rite-in-the-rain" which pencils don't like too much).
The new clue makes it very, very easy to locate, please use it if you need to.
Please use Maximum Stealth - This is Muggle Central. Please also be sure to replace the cache EXACTLY where you found it (and facing OUTWARDS or the magnets won't work) and DON'T reveal what type of container it is!! Anyone who persists in posting a spoiler picture will have their log deleted.
