Remember When??? The Harbour Island People Mover started operating in 1985, between the Fort Brooke Parking Garage and Harbour Island. It traveled the route from downtown Tampa, across Garrison Channel to Harbour Island, (the old Seadon Island). Once there, hotels, restaurants and shops awaited passengers.
There were and abundance of people movers in Florida at the time. 3 in Miami, 3 in Tampa, 2 in Orlando, and 1 in Jacksonville.
The Harbour Island People Mover lost money every year, and it was stated in a local newspaper, (Tampa Tribune, March 6, 1997) that it would have been cheaper to move passengers by private taxi and buy them lunch. In 1996, it cost $600,000 to operate, but only collected $28,000 in fares.
In January, 2000, The Harbour Island People Mover was no more . It was demolished.
The cache site is across the street from the location of the people mover station.
