D Die durch Kiesabbau entstandene "Northeimer Seenplatte" erstreckt sich über eine Fläche von etwa 360 ha und besteht zur Zeit aus 12 künstlichen Seen. Mindestens drei weitere werden noch hinzukommen. Die Förderung des Kieses kann man sich in der nahen Umgebung genau anschauen.
Zur Endstehung der Seen
Am Rand oder Fuß von Gletschern bildet zerkleinerter Kies - zusammen mit noch feinkörnigeren Materialien - die sogenannten Rand- bzw. Endmoränen. In tieferen Lagen kann sich Kies im Laufe geologischer Zeiträume zu Konglomerat verfestigen, wenn chemisch angereichertes Wasser oder Flugsand in die Zwischenräume eindringt. Rascher verläuft diese Kompaktion bei Druck zufolge einer Überlagerung durch andere Gesteinsschichten.
Bei vorwiegend unrunden oder scharfkantigen Gesteinstrümmern spricht man hingegen statt Konglomerat ("Zusammenballung") von Brekzie, bei lockerer, oberflächennaher Ablagerung von Schutthalden (siehe z. B. Dolomiten) beziehungsweise bei Eisdurchmischung von Blockgletschern.
Schon heute gibt es hier vielfältige Möglichkeiten der Freizeitgestaltung, wie Wandern, Baden, Segeln, Surfen, Tauchen und Angeln. Die naturverbundenen Besucher hingegen haben die Gelegenheit, das einzigartige „Wasservogelreservat Northeimer Seenplatte“ als geschützten Lebensraum für die Tier- und Pflanzenwelt zu entdecken. Es besteht zunächst aus drei Seen, später aus vier Seen. Die Seenplatte ist schon heute ein wesentlicher Bestandteil des Northeimer Kultur- und Freizeitlebens.
Im Rahmen der Expo 2000 in Hannover und des Expo-Projektes "Themenpfad Wasser" wurden sechs Informations-Schautafeln rund um die Northeimer Kiesseen aufgestellt, die Entstehungsgeschichte der Northeimer Seenplatte, ihre Bedeutung für Flora und Fauna sowie für Tourismus und Freizeitgestaltung in der Region veranschaulichen.
Für Schulklassen und Gruppen soll zukünftig die Möglichkeit einer geführten Wanderung durch das Wasservogelreservat inklusive Vogelbeobachtung angeboten werden.

The "Northeimer sea-plate" resulted from gravel quarrying extends over a surface of approximately 360 hectars and consists at present of 12 artificial lakes. At least three further will still come.

Already today there are here various possibilities of the leisure activities, like a moving, a bathing, sails, Surfen, a dipping and fishing rods. The nature-connected visitors however have the opportunity to discover the singular "water bird reservation Northeimer sea-plate" as protected habitat for the animal and plant world. It consists first of three lakes, later of four lakes. The sea-plate is already today a substantial component of the Northeimer of culture and leisure life. In the context of the Expo 2000 in Hanover and the Expo project "topic path water" six information diagrams were set up approximately around the Northeimer gravel lakes, which the developing history of the Northeimer sea-plate, their meaning for Flora and fauna as well as for tourism and leisure activities in the region to illustrate. For grades and groups in the future the possibility is to be offered to a led migration by the water bird reservation inclusive bird observation.
