This cache was placed to replace the archived “Arroyo Boulder Hike.” I tried to find this one in early February and decided that if it was ever archived I would replace it as it is too cool of a destination not to have a geocache. It was and I did. Please pack out any garbage you find.
Whenever I explain geocaching to people I always say there are two types of “cachers.” Those that want to bring you to a beautiful place you might never see otherwise and those that just want to vex you. Being a life long Gemini I hope this one does both, ha ha! We believe that geocaching is a great family activity useful for introducing youngsters to the marvels of the natural world, teaching them how to be safe out there and respectful of our earth, and building tenacity and endurance. This one is doable by any agile child from 6-60+. A short hike from the free parking area at the end of Indian School Road at the Embudo Canyon trailhead (N 35 05.943, W 106 28.800). Get on ALBQ Open Space trail #401 to the mouth of this hidden canyon. Elevation gain is a modest, but significant, 380’ or so. You’ll end up at about 6,554’ with a great view to the southwest. It fills a nice gap between other caches in the area and can be reached from above or below. I used two GPSrs to get the coordinates and they agreed. Accuracy was +/- 19’ in this box canyon.
Take care, though! This hike is the classic rock scramble – way more dangerous going down than up. Many parts of the climb up the arroyo are 1.4 billion year old rock underfoot that has been exposed to wind and water for around 10 million years so it can be slick. Also, although there are several ways out I don’t think you’d want to be caught in here in a local downpour. Did I say to take care? We might care about the Sandias but they don’t care about us!
