Forte de Santa Catarina
Edificado em finais do séc. XVI para reforçar a defesa da foz do Mondego, o Forte de Santa Catarina foi elemento, juntamente com a Fortaleza de Buarcos e o Fortim de Palheiros, do sistema defensivo do porto e da baía da Figueira da Foz e de Buarcos. Com estrutura de concepção triangular, tem três cortinas, um meio baluarte e dois baluartes irregulares. A entrada dá acesso a um pátio interior onde se situa uma pequena capela, de planta centrada e cúpula de nervuras, dedicada a Santa Catarina de Ribamar, devendo-se a sua construção ao arquitecto Mateus Rodrigues.
No alvorecer do século XIX, quando da Guerra Peninsular, em 1808 o forte foi ocupado pelas tropas napoleónicas sob o comando de Jean-Andoche Junot. Alguns meses mais tarde, o estudante de Coimbra António Zagalo, natural de Ovar, comandando na qualidade de Sargento, um pequeno destacamento de voluntários, forçou a guarnição francesa do forte à rendição a 27 de Junho, conduzindo-a sob prisão para Coimbra, de onde viera. O forte foi ocupado em seguida pelas forças do Almirante Charles Cotton que, no comando da esquadra britânica ao largo da costa portuguesa, pôde dessa forma assegurar o desembarque seguro de 13.000 homens sob o comando de Arthur Wellesley (futuro Duque de Wellington) na Costa de Lavos, a 1 de Agosto.
O forte com o seu farol permanecem como referência histórica e elemento de destaque no traçado urbanístico da cidade, marcando o ponto de viragem entre a frente de Rio e a frente de Mar.

Santa Catarina’s Fort
Built at the end of the XVI century to reinforce the defences of the mouth of the River Mondego, the Santa Catarina Fort together with the Forts of Buarcos and Palheiros, was part of the defence system for the port and bay to Figueira and Buarcos. With a triangular construction, it has three curtains, a half turret and two irregular turrets. The entrance leads on to an interior patio with a small chapel, centrally planned with a ribbed dome, dedicated to Santa Catarina de Ribamar. The architect was Mateus Rodrigues.
At the beginning of the XIX century, during the Peninsular War, in 1808 the fort was occupied by the Napoleonic troops commanded by Jean-Andoche Junot. Some months later, Coimbra University’s student António Zagalo, born in Ovar, promoted Sergeant, commanded a little group of volunteers and forced the French crew to surrender on June 27th, conducting them to prison in Coimbra, where he came from. The fort was then occupied by the British forces commanded by Admiral Charles Cotton that, in command of the British fleet near the Portuguese seacoast, could assure the safe disembarkation of 13.000 men commanded by Arthur Wellesley (future Duke of Wellington) at Costa de Lavos, on August the 1st.
The fort and its lighthouse are a historic reference and point of note in the urban line of city, marking the turning point between the river and the sea.
