St. Paul's Ford plant spared -- at least for
now. The Ford plant in St. Paul will remain open, at
least for now. The Ford Motor Company Monday named five U.S.
manufacturing plants it plans to close in the next two years. St.
Paul's Ford Ranger plant, which employs nearly 2,000 workers, was
not on the list. While employees expressed relief, they're not out
of the woods yet. Ford plans to close another four auto assembly
plants as part of a major restructuring effort. Two of them will be
named later this year. Many experts consider the St. Paul plant a
likely target. (MPR)

Ford confirms shutdown of St. Paul plant:
St. Paul's Ford Ranger truck plant will shut down sometime in 2008.
Ford officials announced the closing Thursday, along with the
closing of another truck plant in Virginia. The closure will come
despite efforts by the auto workers' union and state officials to
pitch Ford on an alternate future for the plant. The plant employs
almost 1,900 people, many of whom may be hard-pressed to find
comparable work. Nonetheless, some observers found reasons for
optimism after today's announcement. (MPR)

2008:St. Paul Ford plant may get
reprieve: Ford Motor Co. officials
are reportedly studying plans to keep the Ford Ranger plant in St.
Paul open longer than its scheduled fall 2009 closing date, a
source with knowledge of the situation said Wednesday. Skyrocketing
gas prices, stricter emissions standards and the renewed popularity
of the compact and fuel-efficient Ranger truck have conspired to
potentially breathe new life into a doomed 80-year-old factory --
if the financial terms can be worked out, said the source, who
spoke on the condition of anonymity. (Star Tribune)
