Geocache Description:

Neither East nor West and as far North as you can go on land at this longitude!

Please ensure that you approach from the top and not along the field side where the landowner of the field may challenge you. Cache was relocated in Feb 2003 because of the encroachment of the sea and tipping.

Be Warned, you may need thick gloves and trousers as the hiding place is thorny and in season the brambles may take over! Take great care not to put your foot into a rabbit hole or slip into the thorns.

When originally hidden you would have passed an old Ordnance Survey trig point placed by Roos Parish Council to mark the meridian but the sea has taken its toll and it is not more. Coastal erosion is taking over.

If its a clear day you will see shipping in the sea lanes. To the south is the disused Withernsea lighthouse (worth a visit) and north, Bridlington and possibly Scarborough.

The best approach is along the top of the sea wall track as far as N53 45.432 W00 00.001 where there is a sort of tunnel through the thorn trees to field level. This is about 20 paces south of the point where you pass the projection of the field boundary. It is not practicable as it was before to approach along the landward side of the sea wall from the footpath from Roos as a barbed wire fence has been erected but you can ascend the sea wall from this path to get to the suggested route down.

For anyone interested to know what happened to the original container see GC2MVHB - and accept my challenge there!

Sadly, John Stead, the placer of this cache passed away in December 2014. John was on of the Uk's caching pioneers and his role recognised when he was made a Charter Cacher by Groundspeak. John was our guardian angel when we started caching and we feel honoured to be able to formally adopt the cache that we helped him to maintain in his latter years. The cache reflects John's passion for cartography and notable locations. John was a true gent who believed in fair and honest play and we will seek to uphold his values in maintaining this cache. Please let us know if there are any problems with this cache and only place found logs if you have signed the log book. Finds without signatures will be deleted. Thank you. </>
