William Mulholland went from being a
ditch tender with the Los Angeles City Water Company to be the
superintendent and chief engineer of the city’s water department.
He was responsible for building the 233-mile aqueduct that brings
the Owens River water to Los Angeles. The water arrived in Los
Angeles on November 5, 1913. Mulholland Drive was named in his
honor.
The Mulholland Fountain was dedicated August 1, 1940. It quickly
was dubbed the Kool-Aid Fountain because of the way it was
illuminated with colored light at night.
