This cache has been archived.

TheMessyCrew: Time to archive this - thanks to everyone who attended and the amount of people who I've met subsequently who said that they would also loved to have attended. Who knows what the future may hold?!

To walk up the highest point of land in England and Wales and have a look at the new cafe building / terminus.

NOTE THE STARTING CO-ORDINATES!

The parking / trailhead co-ordinates are

N53 07.362 W4 07.602 leaving at 09:30!

I shall be there from about 08:30 if you want to ask questions, have a chat etc. We will leave at 09:30 prompt to walk down to the bus stop where the bus should arrive at 09:48. This should be the double decker bus and there should be room for us all. Click me for the S1 Bus Time Table

What?

We'll walk to the summit of Snowdon and have a look at the new building. We'll also have time to touch the trig point

at the top (why would you want to do that? ), take photos. We'll be at the summit for about 30 - 45 minutes, then we'll descend down to Llanberis. At the summit we shall do our swaps of TBs and coins.

When?

19th July 2008. Unfortunately the cafe will not be finished, they've wangled something with the EU funding but we will still go and walk up this fine mountain because people have cleared their calendars to make room to do this!

Where?

We'll start from Llanberis.

How?

I have been advised this now costs £3.00 for the adult single. The bus will take us straight to Pen-y-Pass. We can take the opportunity to visit the toilet before we start the ascent of the highest point of land in England and Wales up the PyG track. This will take, with a mixed ability group, 3 to 3 and a half hours. Hopefully less but prepare for a longer walk.

IMPORTANT!!! - NO TRAINS TO THE SUMMIT!

As per my note on the 24th of June, the trains are not going to the summit. They stop at Clogwyn station. You will have a walk of about 25 - 40 minutes to reach the summit. We expect to get to the summit at about 13:00 or so for the event. Factor this in to your times if travelling by train.

15th April 2008 - I completed a check of the route to make sure the route is okay.

10th May 2008 - I completed a check of the route again with a small group of people from work to make sure the route is okay again. CLICK ME TO SEE THE ON-LINE VIDEO FROM THE 10th OF MAY

We'll do our stuff at the summit and we'll then descend down to Llanberis along the Llanberis path. This will take with a mixed ability group, about 2 and a half hours. We will pass the bus stop from where this great adventure started and we can collapse in a heap!

Who?

Anyone with a sense of adventure and of course people who enjoy walking / hiking. You do need to be of moderate fitness. Its a long walk so stamina is better than all out strength. The PyG track is more challenging than some other routes. It isn't a flat hardcore path. It has big chunky steps, parts go up small rocky outcrops (only like 2 metres in height). Also think about your knees, the Llanberis path (the descent route) can be unkind on them.

What will I need?

Sturdy footwear, waterproofs, hat, gloves (seriously, see about the weather below), drink and food. Sandwiches with nibbly things are always good. Bananas are a mountain walkers friend!
Consider a spare pair of socks and / or plasters if you suffer from blisters (or buy better fitting boots!)

You keep on going on about the weather. What gives?

Hey, I don't know the weather is doing in two weeks time, let alone in six months time!

I've been on the top of Snowdon in June when it was cloudy, wet and 6 degrees C. Down in Llanberis it was 18 degrees C and sunny! I was kitted out and was warm and dry, however the tourists who went for walk from Llanberis as it was a nice day down there, looked cold, wet and very bedraggled!! That's just the facts, but hopefully it will be sunny, which will mean on a warm day it could be about 12 to 15 degrees at the top and we'll have the views over to Ireland and the Isle of Man.

Does scottpa100 know what he's doing? What about Health & Safety

I go walking up the mountains a lot. Its great fun. Snowdon is a good mountain to take a party of mixed ability up as the paths are generally quite clear and defined. And I have done so before with colleagues from work. But I do this as a friend! Your friend. I am not a mountain leader. I will have my own insurance (cos I go walking in the mountains a lot) but I will not have third party liability insurance for anyone. You break a leg , have a heart attack etc etc, its your cost, your liability and your potential loss of earnings. In other words - YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

Oh dear - what about health and safety generally though now you've got the 'legalese' out of the way?

If its windy, the walk up will be CANCELLED!

The wind is your biggest enemy and there are some big cliffs at the top of Snowdon. It does mean we can still meet up in Llanberis, do some local caches etc. If its raining, the walk will still go ahead (you have remembered your waterproofs right?)
I'll also do a count of people at the start of the walk and at different points along the walk. We don't want to lose anyone! Some responsibility for you guys. You'll be asked to remember 3 other people. So when I do a count and if anyone is missing, you guys will know who is missing!

So, what about caches...?

Oh yes! How could I forget?! En-route the following caches can be achieved.
Pyg 'n' Hell We're Knackered!! - GCGJWJ.
Summit or Submit - GCY0N0.
Where is Snowdon Summit??? - GC5F13.
Half Way Down - GCYV8T.

The parking co-ordinates are the start of a multi too - Padarn Treasure Hunt - GCHH3X.

DON'T FORGET YOUR CAMERAS!
